We would like to highlight to you the work of Nickolai Walko, a 2014 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts. Nickolai works with masking tape to produce high contrast, intricate, and stylized works of art. He desires to capture images of the human form with this non-traditional medium. He places a layer of masking tape on a panel, completely covering the surface. In his technique, the tape acts as a skin on the base, and his X-Acto© knife is a scalpel. He feels like a surgeon as he removes areas of the tape to allow the viewer to see the anatomy beneath.
Originals and reproductions are available at a variety of price points, or Nickolai can create an original piece customized for your practice.
Nickolai’s artwork may be viewed in person at Crossroads Art Center or on his website www.smirnovstudios.com. You may contact us at 804-278-8950 to purchase artwork or for additional information about Nickolai.
