First Place in RVA Open Theme Show
LaVel grew up in northern Minnesota where at 14 she began painting under the tutelage of an uncle who was a professional oil and pastel artist. She continued with college studies in painting and photography while raising two children as her husband’s career path moved the family through Michigan, Ohio, Maryland, and Virginia. During these years, she created and directed a successful interior art and design business offering decorative, “faux” and mural painting. The quality and popularity of her designs lead to publications in the Fall 2000 edition of Better Homes and Gardens Paint Works magazine.
LaVel discovered pastels in 2009 when she began studying under VA PSA artist, Betsy Kellum. Her artistic style continues to evolve as she has added creative blends of her own photography, local botanical “ECO-Dyeing”and mixed media to many of her pastel paintings. The images capture the unique qualities of her paintings as well as photos that reveal a snapshot of life; personal moments that express a joyful spirit of hope, serenity and organic simplicity.
