What is life? A secret that is as mysterious and unknown as the creative powers of an artist. In my piece, Secrets IV, I explore the life force of plants as inspiration for my Raku wall plaque.  As a mixed media ceramic artist, I want to show the seed pod as a container who's secrets are the seeds.

Artist Statement:

Raku, a 16 century Japanese ceramic tradition, is inspirational because the fast-firing technique appeals to me as a contemporary ceramic artist. Even though I use the element of chance and the unintended effects that result, control and artistry are not absent from the original designs. My use of fabric impressed into the surface of the clay produces textures that are enhanced when the piece is placed in a reduction atmosphere creating iridescent qualities on the glazed surface which are complimented by painting or drawing with oil-based pencils and pastels on unglazed surfaces. The addition of fiber, wooden reeds, and beads pays homage to ancient cultures and unites the two- and three-dimensional aspects of the wall plaque. Contemporary pottery dares me to challenge established traditions while exploring and experimenting for the sheer joy of discovering a new approach to the craft. The cycle of life, beginning with conception, gestation, and birth, is a recurring theme in my work. Depicting the energy of a life force that is contained in all organic beings teases me to merge my ideas into mixed media clay wall forms.
