The Visual Arts Center of Richmond has the largest non-university arts program in Virginia, and welcomes the community inside its doors to create art in its professional studios with one-on-one attention from talented instructors. The nonprofit’s instructors not only teach at VisArts, but also instruct at surrounding universities and schools — and their work is shown at galleries around town.
VisArts has classes for all ages and all skill levels, from absolute beginners to experienced professionals. Mediums include clay, digital design, drawing and painting, fiber, glass, metalwork and jewelry, photography, printmaking, writing, sculpture, wood art and furniture building.
VisArts’ youth education program, ArtVenture, is a hands-on art-making program that consists of innovative and educational classes taught by professional artists. At ArtVenture, students have the opportunity to learn more about the process of creating art while gaining a deeper understanding of their own potential. In addition to ArtVenture, youth education is committed to serving our community’s under-resourced and at-risk youth through the Art After School program.
VisArts classes have been voted “Place that offers the best classes for kids” and “Best place to take a class for fun” in Richmond Magazine’s 2014 “Best and Worst” issue.
VisArts is located in the old Virginia Dairy Building in Richmond’s historic Fan District.
