ABOUT THE CLASS: We will work in watercolor, ink, color markers, crayons, and acrylic. Each child will receive individual instruction as well as group instruction. Campers will learn about Picasso and we will create a Picasso-inspired 3D “self-image." We will learn about the ancient art of sumi-e painting, as well as new projects every day. These camps are very interactive and great fun for children. It has been described as “the best week of my life" by former campers!

Painting Pets! with Hope Suzuki

Through guided instruction, students will choose and create their own dog or cat acrylic painting on a 12 x 12 canvas. Each student is encouraged to add their own artistic touches. This event is hosted by Get Creative. To learn more go to Facebook @getcre8tiv.

Let it Flow! Using Handmade Inks and Absorbent Papers

Participants will experiment with various absorbent papers using water-based colored inks, India ink, and inks made from tea, coffee, and natural pigmented liquids that flow and mix or overlap ink line drawings. Create amazing images and forms by applying inks to rice paper, paper towels, and found and other absorbent papers. All inks, papers, pens, and brushes will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring their favorite inks and papers if desired, and bring a small lidded jar to make walnut ink in class to take home. Teen and adult level. Using a Limited Palette with Linda Hollett-Bazouzi
Sunday, July 30 | 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Explore painting with only a few colors that have been in use since the Renaissance, and push those few colors to their limit. We will also paint small studies using Anders Zorn’s palette and variations of Zorn’s palette. Fee: $100 ($95 is registered by July 26). No refunds.

Weeklong Outer Banks Painting Workshop

Fall is gorgeous on the Outer Banks. The water is still warm, the tourists are gone, and the weather is perfect for a weeklong acrylic painting workshop with Adele Castillo at the Dare County Arts Council (DCAC) in Manteo. This workshop will be fun and focused, for experienced beginners to professional painters. A plan will be developed to set goals for the workshop, but artists are encouraged to be open to possibility. There will be surprises to keep everyone energized and creative.

Classes are ongoing with individual attention stressed. Instruction is in acrylic, pastel, watercolor and oil; the student chooses the medium. Class size is limited to 10 students. Fee: $30 per class, with a commitment for one month. Payment is due the first of the month for the entire month to reserve a space. Fees for missed classes will not be refunded or credited for a future class, but each student will receive four unexcused absences for the year. One-week notice is required to discontinue.

Adele teaches acrylic painting along with color theory to adult students of all abilities. Students are encouraged to find their own style and paint subject matter that interests them as they develop their skills. Explore color, learn how to handle acrylic paint, and enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded souls. Classes are small, allowing time for individual attention. Materials list provided on registration or request. Fee: $25 per class, paid monthly in advance.

Chuck Larivey’s painting method is directly based on molding shapes and depicting light and shadow, broad-base at the beginning and continually refined (not overworked) until the desired effect is achieved or until the energy dissipates.This year’s Swimming in Paint will feature monthly sessions, each with five classes). Classes will be devoted to small practice works on Saturdays and conclude with a Saturday/Sunday 2-day large-format class. There will also be Sunday only sessions (usually 3 Sundays per month). Interested in learning traditional approaches to portrait, still life, or landscape painting? Join Merrily Johnstone for an ongoing class in the visual language of art. With input geared to your current level, you’ll develop observational skills and working methods that apply equally to all painting, including representational and abstract principles. Fee: $30 per class, payable monthly.
